Hackney Picturehouse

HACKNEY Picturehouse is the borough’s newest cinema, opening in 2011 with digital and satellite technology for a 3D experience and live screenings, plus three bars, a live music venue, street level café opening on to Mare Street, workspaces and events.

Its five screens - one of which is the largest in the independent Picturehouse group’s stable - and reclining seats creates a state of the art cinema-going experience. There are is also free wi-fi, meeting spaces and offices available for short lets to new creative businesses.

With frosted glass, sculptured installations, pop culture references and spaciousness across many floors, its décor falls somewhere between an art gallery and chic bar. This makes it a perfect pre and post cinema setting, with revellers stopping for a drink and bite, while others catch an open mic night, DJ, gallery, comedy or music show.

Chesham Arms

THIS traditional Homerton boozer has been closed since 2012 after it was bought by a developer who hoped to build a block of flats on the site. Residents and the Campaign for Real Ale have been fighting, supported by Hackney Council, to get the pub reopened and it was listed as an 'asset of community value' after a landmark tribunal ruling in 2013.
