There are myriad independent shops in Hackney due to the strong entrepreneurial streak

Independent

HACKNEY overflows with independent shops and companies, thanks to the strong entrepreneurial streak of the borough's small businesses, coupled with the artistic ingenuity of Europe’s largest creative quarter.

New designers of frocks, furniture and fabrics display their wares up and down Broadway Market, Stoke Newington Church Street, Kingsland Road and along the cross-hatched back roads of Shoreditch.

Here's just a few Hackney jems to get you started if you're looking for something a little bit out of the ordinary: A Child of the Jago, Black Truffle, Fabrications, Fee Fee la Fou, House of Hackney, Hub, Huh, LN-CC, Saint Best, and Start.

Hackney is also a treasure trove of vintage stores with an exotic and intriguing set of names, check out: Beyond Retro, La Vie, Mac Black & Vine, Mint, Paperdress, Pattern Market, Pelican and Parrots, Red, Strut, Storm In A Teacup, or The Other Side of the Pillow,

The borough's bookshops are many and knowledgeably staffed from the Pages of Hackney in Clapton, to Artwords in Broadway Market and Shoreditch, and Victoria Park Books, which specialises in children's literature. Many host community events and book signings.

There are a myriad delicatessens, artisan food and drink, and ethnic food stores in the borough, as well as places selling locally grown produce.

Plus, not unsurprisingly for London's number one cycling borough, there are a number of good bike shops, that stock new and second-hand machines, offer a repairs service, and sell a range of accessories. From London Fields Cycles in Mare Street, to Lock 7, by the canal at Broadway Market, all with staff happy to give new and seasoned cyclists alike good counsel.
