Well Street Market

WELL Street Market is famously where, in 1919, before opening his first Tesco, 21-year-old barrow boy Jack Cohen plied his trade to hundreds of customers.

The number of market traders has decreased over the years, but plans are afoot to entice more local businesses to take up a pitch. Currently, one stall selling ladies fashion is a regular feature on Fridays and Saturdays.

Well Street was once part of an old country lane stretching from Shoreditch to Homerton and the banks of the River Lea. Today, the street boasts an array of local shops including a florist, hairdressers and health food store, plus an art gallery, several cafes and a pub.

Chesham Arms

THIS traditional Homerton boozer has been closed since 2012 after it was bought by a developer who hoped to build a block of flats on the site. Residents and the Campaign for Real Ale have been fighting, supported by Hackney Council, to get the pub reopened and it was listed as an 'asset of community value' after a landmark tribunal ruling in 2013.
