Young People

OVER a quarter of Hackney residents are under 20 years old. So with such a youthful demographic there’s no shortage of exciting activities for young people to get involved with.

Whether it's finding their inner Cher during an X-Factor style talent contest at Hackney Empire, as part of the annual Discover Young Hackney festival; becoming the next Amir Khan at the Boxing Academy; representing the borough on the Hackney Youth Parliament; or attending the local youth club.

Adrenalin Dance

ADRENALIN Dance was founded in 2001 and has an artistic residency at St John-at-Hackney church. It teaches fun, contemporary-based dance classes for children and playful adults, which explore the body’s natural movement potential, as well as fresh approaches to choreography.

Castle Climbing Centre

CLISSOLD Park is one of the borough’s best loved green spaces and underwent a multi-million pound renovation project by Hackney Council. It now boasts amenities including tennis courts; an outdoor table tennis table; bowling green; wheel park for skaters and BMX-ers; and a multi-use games area for five-a-side football and basketball.

Evergreen Play Association

A UNIQUE and progressive theatre project that places disabled artists centre-stage, Graeae is a force for change in the dramatic arts. YOUNG people who live, work or go to school in the borough – and want to make their voice heard – can put themselves up for election to the Hackney Youth Parliament. Haggerston Park

HAGGERSTON Park’s most unusual feature is a BMX track, built in a ‘w’ design that contains jumps and step-ups, and is home to its own bike club. As well as being a great sunbathing and picnic spot, the park also provides a range of sports and recreational facilities including a play area; multi-use games area for tennis, football, basketball and netball; outdoor ping pong table; conservation area; community orchard and food growing garden, pond, changing rooms and toilets.

THE VLC centre was originally set up for refugees from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia who settled in Hackney in the 1970s and 80s, and now serves members from all generations of these communities.
