The New Age Games for older people

Over 50s

FROM waltzes to beginner’s art classes – there’s a wealth of activities on offer in Hackney for the over 50s, tailored to an array of tastes. Tea dances at Stoke Newington Town Hall are one of the borough’s biggest draws, with superstar ballroom DJ Mr Wonderful pulling in punters from all over the capital.

The Amazings are a collective of retired people who use their life experience to teach others skills – from jam making to ukelele playing. The New Age Games sees over 50s get the chance to make new friends, and try physical activities, as well as battle it out for prizes.

Older people charities The Sharp End and Age UK Hackney offer wellbeing classes in yoga and maintaining good health. Additionally, the Council manages or supports a number of day centres in Hackney, which provide a range of activities and facilities for older residents.

And after all, if life begins at 40, by 50 you’re just starting to get good at it.
