Entry opens for young people's talent contest at Hackney Empire

VIDEO submissions have opened for an East London talent competition looking for the freshest new performers.

The Alter Ego contest is calling young people, aged 13 to 21, to submit a video of their act - whether it features singing, dancing, hip-hop, comedy or any other skills - to secure a place in the finals on 1 February next year.

Alternatively, entrants can wow judges at a Hackney Empire audition on 12 January next year before the last six acts are chosen.

Dancer Tolu Okamnlawon, 17, won the Alter Ego title this year and is currently showcasing his talent across London. He said: “Getting up on stage is really nerve-wracking, but the feeling afterwards is so good, I'd definitely advise to go for it.”

Alter Ego forms part of Discover Young Hackney 2013, a free festival that promotes participation and training in the arts for young people through a range of taster sessions and workshops run by creative professionals.

Events include workshops with the Anna Fiorentini Theatre and Film School; acrobatic sessions with Mimbre; a film-making day at Rio cinema; and a design your own branded clothes class.

Discover Young Hackney runs from 1 to 28 February 2013. Alter Ego auditions need to be booked by contacting Hackney Empire on: 020 8510 4396; or e-mailing: projects@hackneyempire.co.uk
