Kaleidoscopic live documentary, Super Everything*, debuts at Hackney Empire

EAST London collective The Light Surgeons dissect Malaysian culture in a kaleidoscopic live documentary showing at Hackney Empire in association with the Barbican.

Super Everything* is an audio-visual case study of the tradition-rich country negotiating industrial progress, ecologic issues, freedom and belief systems. The show debates the individual’s role in society and seeks to discover how complex identities are formed through everyday rituals.

Performed live with visuals across multiple screens, motion graphics, on stage combinations of videos with Malay Gamelan, Chinese drumming and electronic music, the show is enhanced with performances by string players from the Heritage Orchestra. Violinist, producer and filmmaker Zan Lyons will open the evening.

A cutting-edge collection of the UK’s and Malaysia’s leading musical and visual artists form this collaboration. The result combines traditional South East Asian instruments, with Western classical compositions, field recordings and electronic synthesis, all of which are manipulated live and complemented by a stunning immersive experience.

Super Everything* takes place on 19 April at Hackney Empire. Tickets start at £20.
