Trans-national festival, Reel Iraq, comes to Hackney

A DECADE may have elapsed since the invasion of Iraq in 2003, but the war’s legacy remains powerful for Iraqis in and outside of the country.

To mark the 10-year anniversary of the fall of Saddam Hussein, a trans-national festival will celebrate the resilience of Iraq’s long and diverse tradition of arts.

Reel Iraq brings together Iraqi and UK artists, collaborating across borders and cities from Erbil to Edinburgh, in a programme of poetry, film, discussion, music and festivity.

Taking place at venues across the capital, including Hackney’s Rich Mix, Reel Iraq London provides a multi-faceted insight into life in post-Saddam Iraq, beyond familiar media depictions of a war-ravaged country.

The various trials of an all-female basketball team; Mesopotamian satire and poignance in orations of story-tellers and poets; and virtuoso performances from some of Iraq’s most renowned musicians; all testify to the power of art and the every day against a backdrop of conflict.

Reel Iraq runs from 21 to 25 March at different venues across the UK, including Rich Mix.
