Geffrye Museum toasts Christmas past in new exhibition

STEP back in time with the Geffrye Museum's latest exhibition Christmas Past, which celebrates the history of the festive season.

Visitors can walk through a tastefully adorned series of rooms, representative of English homes from 1600 to the present day, which have been decorated in the festive styles of each era.

The exhibition gives an evocative insight into how Christmas has been celebrated down the ages and examines the traditions of feasting, dancing, mistletoe, parlour games, stockings, cards and decorating the tree.

The displays at this Kingsland Road museum are not frivolous or flashy, but carefully researched to give visitors an authentic experience of Christmas in times gone by.

There is a supporting programme of events, including the opportunity to celebrate a Victorian Christmas, carol singing, festive workshops and family days, to accompany the exhibition. Additionally, Christmas-inspired gifts, decorations, cards and books can also be purchased in the mueum shop.

Christmas Past runs until Sunday, 6 January 2013. For more information, call: 020 7739 9893; or visit the Geffrye Museum website
