Preview: Photomonth 2012

FROM the Chagos Islands to fjords of southern Norway and the streets of London, Photomonth 2012 brings together imagery from some of the world’s most far-flung realms.

The annual festival this year consists of more than 150 exhibitions that reflect a diversity of cultures and geographies, as well as of photographic crafts.

Spread across venues in East London and beyond, events range from exhibitions to participatory workshops, performances, talks, walks and other artistic incarnations.

This year’s festival theme is ‘Radical London’. As part of this focus, exhibitions will document the city’s history of street protests, from the struggle of East End sweatshop workers, to more recent demonstrations against infringements on social and civic rights.

Exhibitions will be coupled with artists’ discussions and guided walks by commentators such as David Rosenberg.

Other major events include the Photo-Open at the Rich Mix and Portfolio Review at the V&A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green.

Photomonth 2012 runs throughout November at various venues. For details, call Alternative Arts on: 020 7375 0441; or visit: www.photomonth.org
