Hackney launches programme of free events to mark the festive season

A BUMPER festive season of events and surprises is set to take place across Hackney this December.

Local businesses have teamed up with the Council to provide a combination of funds and creative expertise to Make Hackney Sparkle, the title for this year's programme of free seasonal entertainment.

Digital firms have designed some interactive spectaculars, including 'snow canons' by Poke, which has created a free mobile phone app to allow passers-by in Shoreditch to set off a blizzard.

Other highlights include ice skating rinks opening in St John-at-Hackney churchyard and Hoxton Square, alongside a lights display created by art and design specialist Jason Bruges Studios.

Jamie Oliver's Fifteen Street Market will bring seasonal food to Westland Place and free film screenings will also take place at St John-at-Hackney, thanks to brand and film specialist elevenfiftyfive and Hackney Picturehouse.

Almost £85,000 of funds to support Make Hackney Sparkle have been donated by Everything Everywhere, Lovells, Hackney Empire, Precis Hotels, Chatham Works, Rocket Investments and Estate Office. With support from Albion and Mother who led on the design for the campaign.

Shopping events are also planned in Hackney's markets, including Hoxton, Ridley Road, Broadway, Chatsworth Road, Well Street, Goldsmith Row and Kingsland Waste, with shoppers being treated to free parking.

More information is available on the Hackney Council website.
