Dalston celebrates Rio-London partnership

LOUD beats and lots of cheering could be heard far and wide from Gillett Square as a huge crowd gathered for Dance Nations Dalston.

The event on 21 July was part of the One Hackney Festival which welcomed the Olympic torch to the borough.

Dalston came alive with colourful costumes and an excitable crowd, in a celebration of both London and Rio, through live music and dance including Latin rhythms, loud drums and urban grooves.

Many acts performed throughout the day-long event including The Black Eagles; an acrobatics group from Tanzania, who thrilled the crowd with breathtaking stunts; and Slum Civilians, one of street dancing’s best crews, who taught Gillett Square’s party people some new moves.

Later in the evening, the audience enjoyed an outdoor screening of ‘Koyaanisqatsi’, a cult film set to an atmospheric score by celebrated composer Philip Glass.

And the party didn’t stop there, with the Vortex DJs playing until the early hours for those revellers still left standing.
