London 2012 stadium to host Diamond League meet

BRITAIN'S Olympic stars will again compete against the world's best athletes when the British Athletics London Grand Prix comes to east London in July.

Part of the prestigious Samsung Diamond League, the meet invites elite track and field athletes to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 27-28 July. The event, which was originally to be staged in Crystal Palace, will take place on the one year anniversary of London 2012's opening ceremony.

Mo Farah, Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion, said: "It's fantastic that the British Athletics London Grand Prix is going to be held at the Olympic Stadium. The atmosphere was electric during the Games, I'll never forget it, so it's great that the British fans, and athletes, will get to experience that again so soon after the Games. It'll be perfect preparation for the World Championships in August."

Jessica Ennis, Olympic Heptathlon champion, added: “It will give athletes and fans who did not get to experience the amazing venue the chance to go there, and for those of us who had the most incredible experiences on the track and field, an opportunity to re-live a few memories.”

Last year it was confirmed the stadium will also host the IAAF and IPC World Championships in 2017.

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park - of which a third is in Hackney - will begin to open to the public from 27 July, exactly one year after the London 2012 opening ceremony. Starting with Hackney's north park, a £292million transformation project will fully open the site by spring 2014.

It will be a new piece of the city with new homes and schools, state of the art venues,  public parklands and a year round programme of events.
