The world's best bars found in Hackney, says drinks industry poll

HACKNEY has some of the best bars in the world, according to a respected annual survey.

Drinks International magazine named three of the East London borough’s drinking holes in its list of top 50 bars worldwide.

City Road’s Nightjar, Callooh Callay on Rivington Street, and Happiness Forgets in Hoxton Square all made the top 12.

Nightjar came in at number three, and Callooh Callay at nine, both improving on last year's positions, while Happiness Forgets was a new entry at 12.

Callooh Callay owner Richard Wynne said he was ‘humbled’ that the bar was included in the poll, adding ‘we're in such good company with our favourite London bars, especially those in Shoreditch’.

Edmund Weil, Nightjar owner, said his bar remained popular due to ‘innovating the drinks on our menu while adhering to old-fashioned values of service’.

Happiness Forgets owner Alastair Burgess added his bar was lucky to have customers that enjoyed coming there.

Overall, London had six of the top 10 bars in the world, beating New York’s two.

Drinks International’s annual lists are based on the opinions of industry experts from around the globe.
