Dizzee Rascal gives advice to Hackney youth

AROUND 200 aspiring musicians attended a music Q&A with popstar Dizzee Rascal and Radio 1Xtra DJ Target at Hackney Picturehouse on 6 June.

Sat on a white leather Chesterfield sofa, Dizzee looked very much at home in front of the young East London audience as he spoke candidly about his 'rough and wild' early beginnings – and the journey he took to achieve international success.

“Kids see the music industry as a fast track to success,” he said. “But it’s hard work. What drives you isn’t cash or money – I did it for the crowds and the reactions.”

Dizzee advised the young audience that anyone who wants to break into the notoriously tough music industry to put themselves 'out there' through Twitter and other social networking sites; give demos to local and pirate radio stations; go to raves to get exposure; and to listen to a wide variety of music.

He said: “You need to work, work, work – you need tunnel vision. Try to build good relationships, go to places you wouldn’t normally go, don’t bring trouble and put in those extra hours you don’t want to do.”

In reply to a youngster you asked how Dizzee felt getting into commercial music, he said: “I was into drum and bass. Before that I was into heavy metal – like Guns N’ Roses – I like every sort of music.

"I don’t know what is commercial no more – that’s like saying everyone who lives in the hood just likes rough, violent music. That’s not true – I like to play music with a meaning to it as opposed to people who just want to shack each other in the club.”

The inspirational masterclass was part of the BBC Radio1 and 1Xtra Academy, which aims to leave a lasting legacy for young people in the borough in the run-up to the Hackney Weekend on 23 and 24 June.
