Preview: Qudz at The Yard, Hackney Wick

SADDAM promised unity, and delivered collapse. Bush promised freedom and delivered chaos.

An original new play from The Yard mixes drama, live music, film, animation and dance, to capture the lunacy and chaos of war-ridden Iraq.

Written and directed by its associate artistic director Tarek Iskander, Qudz tells the story of a young Iraqi soldier sent on an epic journey down the Tigris to deliver an enigmatic militia leader, who promises to hold the answer to all the country's problems.

The latest work from Iskander, who came to the UK as a refugee following the First Gulf War, provides a timely balance to the current Arab Spring related focus on the Middle East, by reflecting on the past and ongoing calamity in the region's civilisational heartland.

Merging Conrad's Heart of Darkness with astonishing first-hand accounts, Qudz brings audiences face to face with the everyday lives of Iraqis in a fusion of comedy, tragedy and absurdism.

Qudz is on at The Yard until 3 November. For more, visit: www.theyardtheatre.co.uk
