Open House: See Hackney's architecture up close

TAKE the chance to discover great architecture in the borough, as buildings in Hackney throw open their doors to the public this weekend for free.

During the capital’s largest, annual architectural festival – Open House London – visitors will be offered glimpses into some unique buildings over 22 and 23 September.

Clissold House, in N16, is a Grade II listed building that dates back to the 1790s, and has been lovingly restored to its former glory through a £8.9million restoration project.

Stoke Newington Town Hall, also in N16, is a beautifully restored Art Deco building. The former municipal hub can now be hired for a wide range of occasions, including wedding ceremonies and receptions, civil partnerships, parties and community events so it's worth checking out the impressive interiors.

Village Underground, EC2A, is a cavernous event space which uses recycled tube train carriages to house affordable artists’ studios and offices on top of an abandoned railway viaduct in Holywell Lane, Shoreditch.

Sutton House, in E9, was built in 1535 by prominent courtier of Henry VIII, Sir Ralph Sadleir. It retains much of the decor of a Tudor home despite some alterations by later occupants, including merchants, Huguenot silkweavers, and squatters. Discover oak-panelled rooms, original carved fireplaces and a beautiful courtyard.

Hackney Empire, in Mare Street, E8, is a Grade II listed theatre. It is a beautiful example of Edwardian variety theatre design, and a tour of the building is a chance to see new backstage areas and restored interiors.

The Grade II listed saloon-style music hall Hoxton Hall; St Augustine’s Tower; Rivington Place; Dalston Culture House; and the Almshouse at Geffrye Museum are just a few of the other buildings to be explored in Hackney this weekend.
