Torch to light up the square

THE Paralympic torch relay is set to reach the borough this evening backed up by entertainment outside Hackney Town Hall.

Ten public nominated individuals from across the UK will carry the torch through Hackney Central as it continues its journey to the Olympic Stadium.

From 5-6.30pm, the Town Hall Square will host dance performances by carnival group Tropical Isles; music from The Hoxton Singers; and comedy from deaf stand-up comedian Steve Day. The flame should reach Hackney just after 6pm.

The London 2012 Paralympic Torch relay began on 24 August from Stoke Mandeville, Buckinghamshire, the spiritual home of the Paralympic Games. So far four flames have travelled across the country and were reunited to make the final trip to the Stratford stadium.

Estimated times:

6.08pm  At the junction of Mare Street and Victoria Park Road the torch is released from the convoy and passed to bearers 

6.11pm  Torch travels along Mare Street and passes Beck Road

6.17pm  Torch travels along Mare Street and passes St Thomas Square

6.19pm  Torch turns left onto Reading Lane 

6.21pm  Torch arrives and makes its way up the ramp to the top of the Town Hall stairs

6.26pm  Torch departs back onto Reading Lane and left onto Eleanor Road

6.29pm  Torch turns left into London Fields.
