Kickstart your New Year health drive in Hackney

KEEPING those good New Year resolutions needn't be a chore. Destination Hackney brings you a host of fun and healthy things to do to recover from last month's overindulgence.

As the borough with the largest expanse of green spaces in inner London, Hackney is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors. Get on your bike for a picturesque cycle ride from Dalston to Camden or to Limehouse on the river Thames, via lovely waterside cafes. Take the whole family for a stroll in Clissold Park, of which its extensive facilities include tennis courts and an adventure playground. And if you fancy a refreshing outdoor swim, the Olympic-sized London Fields Lido is open whatever the weather.

January is the ideal time to keep fit and take up a new hobby. Stoke Newington’s Castle Climbing Centre is one of the best indoor climbing walls in London, with more than 450 routes to master. Clissold Leisure Centre on Stoke Newington Church Street boasts two 25-metre swimming pools, a squash court and a modern gym.

If sports aren’t your cup of tea, eat your way to a healthier you and sample one of Hackney’s great cafes or restaurants. Try Happy Kitchen's London Fields bakery or Pogo Cafe in Clapton for vegan hot meals and sugar-free cakes. Enjoy freshly prepared meals in the café at Unpackaged or stock up on organic ingredients in their shop (though bring your own Tupperware) and prepare a delicious, healthy meal at home.

There’s now no excuse not to turn over a new, healthier leaf in 2013 - or at least until the end of January.
