Hackney Wick & Olympic Park

THE industrial landscape of Hackney Wick hides – or maybe perfectly fits – the engine room of East London’s art and culture movement.

Hackney Wick from the Eastway Bridge

The area has more artists and art studios per capita than any other place in Europe – latest counts suggest around one in seven residents are either an artist or arts professional.

The Wick has always been a place of business, with its core industries of printers and publishers, bespoke manufacturers and specialist caterers now rubbing shoulders with artists, designers and digital creators.

It’s also home to two annual festivals that celebrate the local scene: community event Hackney Wick Festival, and Hackney WickED, which promotes the area's studios and creativity.

Hackney Wick faces the Olympic Park across the River Lea, and the area is undergoing radical change as a result of its concentration of creative individuals as well as urban regeneration stimulated by the London 2012 Games. The urban landscape of warehouses, factories and car parks is being transformed, with industrial buildings converted into galleries, event spaces, restaurants, bars and cafes.

A once hard to reach area, Hackney Wick station is now connected to the rest of the capital by the London Overground network, and is just a few minutes away from Stratford and the international rail terminus there.
